Disney movies are fucking terrible.
It never occurred to me that the ‘default’ comment to my daughter was ‘you’re so pretty!’, where my nephews get ‘you’re so strong’ or ‘you’re so smart’. It’s drilled into little girls that being pretty is important. Little boys just don’t HAVE to be pretty.
Even the Disney movies, which are considered a staple in anyone’s childhood are terrible. My daughter loves ‘Beauty and the Beast’, which is about a man who’s a total dick. A witch turns him into being a beast for being a jerk, and so he KIDNAPS a girl’s father, and then makes her trade herself for him. Then, while keeping her prisoner FORCES HER TO DATE HIM, even saying ‘If you don’t want to eat with me, then you can STARVE!’.
Then, because this is a fairy tale, he changes. Except that men like that NEVER change, and this is just setting women up for abuse.
All Belle has to be is pretty, and put up with a jerk, and she can be a princess. Great Disney, thanks for teaching THAT to a generation of women.
